A Lake Superior Windstorm is our Welcome

Here we are warm and cozy in our motel room tonight in Washburn WI, near Bayfield WI.

We are on the shore of Lake Superior and this was the scene at our motel as we arrived mid-afternoon:

Then the winds began; then the temps dropped. The scene now is that we are sitting by the heater having a glass of wine and happy to be indoors. Our cruise of the Apostle Islands is scheduled for late afternoon tomorrow.  We just received a message that tonight's cruise has been cancelled and there is a chance tomorrow's will be also.  We will see. We definitely have the feeling that this may happen very often in this part of the world! Tonight certainly has that "batten down the hatches" feel tonight. We might as well be on the North Sea!

We began the day still in Cable. One last view of the lake at the resort and we headed lo the golf course for just a couple more hours. The hills were all still there and it was as challenging and fun esterday. These are some pictures of our favorite hole -- an impossible par 3 with tee shot over the marsh.

One last view of Lake Namakagon

After golf we headed to the Brick House in Cable for a wonderful lunch. The tee shirts here are say "As you saw on TV Guy was here,",a reference to his  TV show from a couple years back. It was as small and quaint as we expected and offered an amazing array of sandwiches, coffees and desserts. We counted six people working the cash register and/or kitchen, all with big smiles and welcome vibes.
Some of the guests were probably ATVers. This is a very popular summer activity here. One trail we saw people on went through the golf course; we saw many participants in town. Rentals are plentiful; must say it does look like a fun sport, even if a bit noisy.

Then we headed north, stopping to see our motel and take the picture above in Washburn continuing on to Bayfield WI.  This was much more a tourist town than we had expected. It is a perfect example of a sailing town: huge marina; old, very large and picturesque wooden houses mostly with long covered wrap around porches and often with widow walks; steep hills from the shore everywhere in the city; lively downtown; and a real feel of  the sea. The population sign said less than 500 people live there which we found incredible with so many residences and stores. We can only surmise many leave for the winter. We will be returning here tomorrow to explore and MAYBE to take a boat tour of the Apostle Islands.
